Winter is a great time to consider having a photoshoot in your home. This is an especially easy option if you have very young children or babies and the idea of heading out in the cold is all too much! Having a photoshoot at home also means you have all your props and outfit changes right there and can be flexible on the day.

Here are my top tips for taking photos in your home, you can use these when you are doing photos yourself, even if they are just on your phone!

• Look for some good light - this will usually be near a window. You can take gorgeous photos using window light. Use the light to illuminate your subject and highlight the details you love. A window can also create a beautiful backlit scene, especially if you have a sheer curtain with the sunlight behind it. Sometimes outside looking in or inside looking out can provide natural framing and a unique perspective.

• De-clutter! By removing distractions in the background the subject of your photos will shine. For example, if the photos are of your kids snuggled on your bed, clear off the bedside tables. Perhaps it's a shot up at the kitchen bench, slide some of the daily essentials that hang about up there out of the shot.

• Don't be afraid to shuffle things around to enhance the photo, maybe pulling a chair closer to the window will give you a great spot to contain your kids for a few moments t get the shot. Often the novelty of putting something in a new location will encourage their participation :-)

• Think about colours: If you can match up some tones, create some contrast or just try and choose some outfits that create a pleasing colour combination. This will bring some harmony and unity to your pictures. Alternatively, if you are trying to capture the wild and crazy outfit choices made by your kids try and put them in a neutral space to highlight your subject!
